SpaceX launches a Tesla into space
This Tuesday millions of spectators from all over the world witnessed the launch into space of the world’s most powerful rocket , the Falcon Heavy , and the landing of the two Falcon 9 rockets on Earth, perfectly synchronized.
And what was the Falcon Heavy rocket carrying? Well, neither more nor less than Elon Musk’s red Tesla Roadster . During the twelve hours following its launch, the route of the car could be followed live, piloted by the doll nicknamed “Starman” and with “Life on Mars” by David Bowie accompanying him on his journey.
And that’s how a private company got one of the most shocking images that man has seen, a car flying over Earth. A demonstration of its capacity for technological innovation.
When a private company gets ahead of NASA
Elon Musk, who runs the Tesla car company and also chairs SpaceX, can boast of being the first man to put a vehicle into orbit between Earth and Mars, which will reach the red planet in six months. A space event that is already compared to the Apollo missions of the 60s and 70s.
Undoubtedly, it is an advertising action on an excessive scale (the launch was the second most watched streaming on YouTube, behind the jump of Felix Baumgartner at an altitude of 39 km), but is the objective only advertising? Of course not. What Musk has achieved with this action is to value the power of private companies in matters of R&D , carrying out an action that not even NASA itself has been able to carry out.
SpaceX has already advanced that it continues to work in this regard and that this event is only a “test” prior to a more powerful rocket, the Big Falcon Rocket, which the company intends to use in five years to take people to Mars.
“It is the first time that a private company has surpassed any government in the world. This is bigger than anything Russia or China does . ” Statements by the specialist in the space sector and professor at the University of Southern California, Greg Autry , for the Bloomberg agency, which show the steps that private companies are taking to make their way in sectors traditionally led by the public institution. Now, rockets developed by space agencies have competitors born from the private sector, such as the Falcon rockets.
Elon Musk’s power and innovation capacity continues to overwhelm us. Let’s not forget that last week, Musk decided to put up for sale the flamethrowers that his startup The Boring Company had created. An action that for many users was a joke, but with which it has raised two million dollars in a few days.
